Government Center

Milton, Georgia • 30,870 sf

Renovations were made to a former church campus for conversion into a government center for the City of Alpharetta. The building includes a police and detention holding area for the City’s Municipal Court, courtroom, court services, a Fulton County senior services program, city recreation offices, and program space for the recreation department.

The conversion of this existing building into a fresh, multi-use government center involved significant additions, circulation changes, renovations and aesthetic improvements. This facility houses a blend of people involved with the municipal court, court services and detention, recreation and parks program, senior services, youth offerings and art instruction.

Exterior renovations enhanced the new uses by providing a signature front entry porch for the courtroom, a porte-cochere to shelter senior citizens at their drop-off point, handicap accessibility for the second floor and a secure zone for transferring detainees to holding cells.

Interior changes provided a courtroom in the former sanctuary area, detention facilities in the former church administrative offices, improved public reception, stair construction and handicap accessibility.

Built in phases to allow services to continue throughout the construction period, the result is an excellent example of adaptive reuse of a community structure.
