Cold Storage Facility

Ridgefield, Washington •
258,000 sf

The first cold storage facility in the United States to receive LEED Gold Certification, UNFI’s Washington state building uses 100% Green Power.

In order to achieve a 39 point LEED Gold Rating, designers incorporated a complete sustainable design strategy. Motion activated sensors and flow controls reduced total water use by 40%. Another green choice was use of indigenous plant species, which reduced over 50% of irrigation needs. Material choices such as low or zero-VOC emitting finishes and FSC-certified wood products reflected the client’s commitment to responsible design. Further, over 95% of construction waste was diverted from local landfills.

In total, the energy reduction calculates to almost 30% when compared to a similar building of this size.

The project includes 189,000 sf of warehouse space, 55,000 sf of refrigerated areas, and 14,000 sf of office space.
